Race for Hope!

On June 15th 2023 pupils and teachers from Rothaugen school in Norway gathered to create awareness about the situation for children in Brazil, and to raise money for a charity called “Hope”. The weather was luckily on our side! The sun was shining, and there was a feeling of summer in the air! What better way to raise money for charity in June than to dress up in a costume and earn money from sponsors by taking part in the school race?!

In the weeks leading up to the event, pupils in the 8th and 9th grade had each completed a lesson with Tine to learn about life for children living on the streets in Brazil. Tine owns and runs the charity, “Hope” that has a home for street kids in Taubate, Brazil. Tine helped the pupils understand about life in poverty, and raised awareness for the kinds of challenges that children on the streets often have to deal with.

Pupils taking part in the race had collected sponsors that had promised to donate a small amount of money for every round that the pupils completed in the race. The result was fantastic! Not only did we manage to raise a sizable sum for Hope, but the pupils were able to develop their understanding of several Sustainable Development Goals. The financial support that we were able to give Hope is a good contribution to Goal #1 – Poverty, Goal #3 – Good health and well-being, and Goal #4 – Good education for children. The pupils in Norway had an important learning experience about how to contribute to these kinds of issues, and how the center in Brazil supports the local community in these ways.
